Best Tours and Activities in Guarda | Explore Portugal

Nestled in the Serra da Estrela mountains, Guarda is the highest city in Portugal, offering a unique blend of medieval charm, breathtaking landscapes, and a peaceful atmosphere. Strolling its narrow streets, visitors discover a delightful mix of granite buildings, cozy cafes, and traditional Portuguese culture, all framed by stunning mountain views.

A Glimpse into the Past

Founded in 1199, the city holds centuries of history, visible in its imposing cathedral and ancient walls. Guarda played a crucial role as a defensive stronghold on the border, leaving a rich legacy of monuments that tell stories from the Middle Ages through to modern times.

When Should You Visit?

While Guarda welcomes visitors year-round, spring and early autumn bring pleasant weather, perfect for exploring on foot. Winters can be chilly but are ideal for those wishing to see the nearby Serra da Estrela dusted with snow, offering a different kind of charm.

What Are the Must-Sees?

The Sé Cathedral, with its Gothic and Manueline styles, is a highlight not to be missed. The historic city walls, the Judiaria (Jewish quarter), and panoramic viewpoints are also favorite stops. Don't forget to taste the local cheese and sweets!
